late summer / early autumn wildflowers

In the spring I began filling this wee sketchbook (under 3" square) with Texas wildflowers found near our new home. Then throughout the hot, humid summer, I sort of ignored it . . . . There weren't as many wildflowers seen then anyway.

But now lots of new ones have filled the local pastures, mostly yellow. So I added them this past week.

  1. I noticed some white in your paintings. What do you use for white? Are you outlining your watercolors paintings or painting in your pen sketches with watercolors? I am interested for my own nature notebook.

    Thank you.

  2. Rebecca, I first drew these in ink using mostly Noodler's Lexington gray or polar brown inks which are usually water-resistant when dry, then watercolor. Usually I would use the white of the paper for white but since this is on toned paper I used a white Neocolor II watercolor crayon. For a denser white, color directly on the paper then soften with a damp brush. To lighten "pastel" colors, I lifted some white off the crayon with a damp brush like you would a watercolor pan color, then blended it with watercolor on my palette.

    1. I used to grow morning glories from seed which are similar but the wild ipomoea are nicer. Hope the seaon is wonderful where you are, Jana!

  4. I never would have thought to use a white watercolor crayon. That is brilliant! There have been so many times that I wished I had white, little did I know I already did, but now I will start using it in my nature journal. Your work is beautiful and an inspiration. Thank you for sharing!

    1. I have tried using a white colored pencil (too weak) or white gouache (too heavy for watercolors) but the white watercolor crayon seems to be "just right", being able to be used lightly or heavily and blendable.
